Top 5 – Awesome Movies Coming Out in June

Where as May was a relatively lackluster month for movies, June is as good as it gets.  This is the perfect summer movie month.  We get a great combination of big budget franchise films and small indie movies, including my favorite comedy of the year.  Here are my picks for the best movies coming out in June.

5 – THE BIG SICK (Michael Showalter, June 23)

I had the pleasure of seeing The Big Sick at this year’s Sundance Film Festival and it is far and away the best comedy of the year.  What a delightful film.  Comedian Kumail Nanjiani co-wrote and stars as one half of a couple who’s cultures begin to clash as their relationship grows.  Zoe Kazan stars as the other half of the couple and her and Nanjiani has wonderful chemistry.  You can’t help but fall in love with them.  We also get great performances from Holly Hunter and Ray Romano as Kazan’s parents.  This is a sweet, smart, hilarious comedy and a great romantic comedy for men and women.

4 – IT COMES AT NIGHT (Trey Edward Shults, June 9)

A24 is my favorite production studio around today, so anything they put out I am going to be excited for.  It Comes at Night looks like another hit for the studio.  The marketing has been great, as we know barely anything about what is going to happen, only that there is something this poor family is frightened of.  I love stars Joel Edgerton and Christopher Abbott and think they will elevate the emotion in the film.  This could be the horror movie of the year.

3 – CARS 3 (Brian Fee, June 16)

The Cars franchise could be argued as the black sheep of the Pixar family.  I personally like the films, particularly the first one.  After the spy-themes Cars 2 (2011), it looks like they are bringing the franchise back home in Cars 3.  Lightning McQueen (voiced by Owen Wilson) and the gang are back, but this time, they are older and newer cars are taking over.  The trailer looks darker than the other two films and guarantees the most emotional film in the series.  It wouldn’t be a summer without a Pixar movie and this looks like a great one.

2 – WONDER WOMAN (Patty Jenkins, June 2)

My top two picks for the month are both with reservations.  Wonder Woman lands at number two because the reservation is bigger.  To say the DCEU is off to a rocky start would be a compliment.  After the mediocre Man of Steel (2013) and the horrendous Batman v. Superman (2016) and Suicide Squad (2016), the entire universe is in shambles.  However, the best thing out of all three movies was the appearance of Wonder Woman in Batman v. Superman, which is why I am incredibly excited for this film.  Gal Gadot looks excellent as the amazon princess and having an indie, character-driven director like Patty Jenkins at the helm makes me think there will be more than just action and special effects.  This is my most anticipated comic book movie of 2017.

1 – ALL EYEZ ON ME (Benny Boom, June 16)

I am a HUGE 2-Pac fan.  He is one of my five favorite rappers of all-time and I listen to his music daily.  His personality was as big as his talent, so to encompass who the man really was is a big, big task.  Is director Benny Boom up to the task?  It’s tough to say.  He’s rather inexperienced and I think with someone as big as 2-Pac and someone with such a wild life, a stronger director should have been picked.  If they got one thing perfect, though, it is the casting of Demetrius Shipp Jr. as Pac.  He looks and sounds just like him and is full of personality, which is necessary to bring Pac to life.  Will this be a near masterpiece like Straight Outta Compton (2015) or something lesser like Notorious (2009)?  Maybe better than both?  Maybe worse?  We’ll find out on June 16th.
